Hosea 13

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

"When Ephraim spoke with trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended me by worshipping Baal, he died.

And now they sin more and more and have made themselves molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of them the work of the craftsmen. The men who offer [human] sacrifice speak to idols; they kiss the calf-idols.

Therefore they shall be like the morning mist and as the early dew that passes away, like the chaff that swirls out of the threshing floor and as the smoke out of the chimney.

Yet I am the LORD your God since the land of Egypt, and you shall know no god but me for there is no saviour beside me.

I knew you in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.

When they had pasture, they were filled; when they were filled, their heart was lifted up in pride; therefore they have forgotten me.

So I will be like a lion to them; like a leopard I will lurk by the way to watch them.

I will meet them like a bear that is bereaved of her cubs, and I will rend the covering of their heart; and I will devour them like a lion, as the wild beast would tear them.

O Israel, you have destroyed yourself; but in me is your help.

Where is your king that he may save you in all your cities? And your judges of whom you said, 'Give me a king and princes?'

I gave you a king in my anger, and took him away in my wrath.

The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is stored up.

The sorrows of a woman travailing in childbirth shall come upon him; but he is an unwise son for he stays too long at the opening of the womb [and does not come to birth].

I will ransom them from the power of the grave. I will redeem them from death. O death, where are your plagues. O grave, where is your destruction? Pity shall be hidden from my eyes,

Though he is fruitful among his brothers. An east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall come up from the wilderness; his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up. His treasure of all the precious vessels shall be plundered.

Samaria shall become desolate, for she has rebelled against her God; they shall fall by the sword, their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their pregnant women shall be ripped up."
