1 Timothy 2:5

 5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, Christ Jesus, himself [having been] human, [So praying to Mary or supposed saints directly conflicts with scripture; it denies the preeminence of Christ Jesus as the one-and-only mediator between God and man, and it is an abomination. From the Word of Lord within: "they bow to saints that they themselves have created; they bless their own ways. The men in the sects decide who are saints, and then they pray to them as though they are Gods." This is just an imitation of the practice of the Roman Senate, to designate emperors as Gods: Julius Caesar, Augustus, etc.

Protestant Christianity teaches that Christ being the mediator, is like a defense lawyer who never loses a case and is going to excuse their life of sin because they "believe;" but that is not the function of Christ the mediator. The mediator's function is not to excuse, it is to mediate the new covenant, writing the law of God in a man's heart, so changing a man to become holy and pure, freed from all sin, perfected forever, and in union with Christ and God, speaking and working according to the will of God, not the man's own will any longer.
