Display Chapter and Footnotes

36 And he said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible to you; take away this cup from me. Nevertheless not what I will, but what you will."2 [Jesus told us six times that we too must deny ourselves and pick up our cross daily — long before he went to the cross himself. So he went to the horrible death of the cross as an example to us of the obedience necessary to slay our selfish spirit on the inward cross of self-denial so that we could be reconciled to God: The world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me. John 14:31.]

39 And he went a little farther and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, "O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless not as I will, but as you will."

42 Then he went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, "O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me unless I drink it, your will be done."2 [So he went to the horrible death of the cross as an example to us of the obedience necessary to slay our selfish spirit on the inward cross of self-denial so that we could be reconciled to God: The world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me. John 14:31.]

Luke 22:42

42 Saying, "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; nevertheless not my will, but yours be done."2 [Jesus only did the will of the Father, and so too must we only do the will of the Father if we expect to enter the Kingdom of Heaven: as Jesus said, "only he who does the will of the Father shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven." Mat 7:21. To be able to speak and act according to the will of the Father, your selfish, sinful nature must killed on the inward cross of self denial.]
