 59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witnesses against Jesus, to put him to death;4 [Why did they want to put Jesus to death? Despite their best efforts to discredit Jesus, the Jews were afraid that the whole world would follow Him. Not only were the Jews worried about their jobs, palaces, power, income, and prestige, but also their entire religion was threatened by Jesus' teachings and miracles because if the whole world followed Him, the Romans might see that as a threat and destroy Israel.]
