2 Thessalonians 2

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

 1 Now we beg you, brothers, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to him,

 2 That you do not become easily shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter as if from us, saying that the day of Christ has come.

 3 Let no man deceive you by any means; for that day will not come, until a falling away has come first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition; [The man of sin, the son of perdition, is Satan's spirit within you.]

 4 Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he sits as God in the temple of God [your heart], proclaiming himself to be God.1

 5 Do you not remember that when I was with you, I told you these things?

 6 And now you know what restrains him so that he might be revealed in his time.

 7 For the mystery of iniquity [lawlessness, sin] is already at work; only He who now restrains it allows it, until he [it] appears out from your midst.

 8 And then that wicked one [Satan's spirit within you] will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the spirit of his mouth, and destroy with the brightness of his coming.

 9 Even him, whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

 10 And with all the deceivableness of unrighteousness in those who perish; because they did not receive the love of the truth so that they might be saved.

 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie;

 12 So that all those might be damned who do not believe the truth, but have pleasure in unrighteousness.2

 13 But we should always give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved of the Lord, because God has from the beginning chosen you for salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth,

 14 To which he called you by our gospel, that you might obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

 15 Therefore, brothers, stand fast and hold the traditions that you have been taught, whether by word or letter.

 16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who has loved us and has given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

 17 Comfort your hearts, and establish you in every good word and work.

1 for that day will not come, until a falling away has come first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he sits as God in the temple of God [your heart], proclaiming himself to be God. This is exactly what Jesus said to his disciples: "when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place, (whoever reads, let him understand)," Mat 24:3-15, Mark 13:3-14; and for his disciples to see the abomination of desolation, it had to be a personal experience, not something yet to occur as "Christianity" believes.

until a falling away has come first — most, if not all, believers have a lapse in their first love and temporarily return, (most permanently), to the ways of the world, (lusts, anger, pride, pleasures, etc.); as Peter wrote: "But it has happened to them according to the true proverb, 'The dog returns to his own vomit again;' and the sow that was washed returns to her wallowing in the mire. 2 Peter 2:12-22. Those who will eventually reach salvation, return to the narrow way of patient waiting and obedience.

the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he sits as God in the temple of God [your heart], proclaiming himself to be God. This refers to the evil spirit in you, the man of sin, being revealed. Every man starts with the spirit of Satan sown in his heart. This selfish spirit must be crucified before Christ can reign. Before Christ is revealed, the man of sin is revealed, showing you all manner of evil on the earth (that is in you); this is the abomination of desolation, standing in your heart's temple, where it should not be. But this is the end of your fleshly self, as Christ then comes and slays this residual spirit of Satan within you by the brightness and splendor of his coming, by his breath, and by his crushing the head of Satan under your feet [heel]. The final judgment. The true baptism of the Holy Spirit: into the death of Christ. The baptism of death. The sharing of his death. Then Jesus is resurrected in you to be your true Lord, 2 Cor4:14,Col2:11-12,3:1, Eph 2:6, who orders, (commands, prompts), all your thoughts, words to be spoken, and deeds to be done.

George Fox from the Cambridge Journal:

If you wait [on God] in what is pure in you, you will find and see, because God has given you a measure of his spirit, by which you can comprehend things and see the deceits. Now when the mind goes forth from that pure measure, which lets you see deceits, the simplicity is ensnared, and God is not in your thoughts any more; instead, the son of perdition in you sits in the temple of God, where he ought not to sit. With the birth of the Lord [in you], this son of perdition is discovered, and with the brightness of the Lord's coming [in you], he is consumed; that man of sin is revealed [in you], and so shall you witness the scriptures fulfilled. But you must wait in that which is pure, which will show you when your mind departs into disobedience, setting up Baal's priests (outward) before God, and that brings a distraction in the mind where there is a halting between two (you and God); for all of the troubles are without in the world, but Christ said that "in me you shall have perfect peace." Wait in Christ and mind him in yourself, (there is where you wait for his appearing). Keep focused inward, (stay seeking Christ within yourself), and do not follow the cries of lo Christ is here and lo Christ is there to distract you to outward seeking, you will have peace in a short time. You will later witness [see, experience] Christ, who is the substance of the prophets and apostles. The scriptures are shown to you within you (by Christ) to guide you to the Father, the Lord God of heaven and earth. By waiting for the Spirit of the Lord within you to guide your mind, you will find your strength renewed daily by the one Spirit that gave forth the scriptures. There is no confusion, but instead perfect peace. This Spirit baptizes into the one body, and this Spirit is the unity of the saints, who though absent in body, yet are present in Spirit, all being made to drink into one Spirit. This Spirit circumcises and puts off the body of sin from you, and you are sanctified through your obedience to the Spirit. You will come to witness the scriptures pure and clear, as they are without any mixture [of man's interpretations], as holy men possessed them and gave them forth. So holy men possess them and give them forth again and witness them again.

Christendom totally misinterprets this verse to be the supposed one antichrist, (though many antichrists had already appeared 2000 years ago), that is supposedly revealed before Jesus makes His supposed one-time return to the earth, thinking that the Jewish temple in Jerusalem will be rebuilt, animal sacrifices reinstituted, and the antiChrist will appear in that temple declaring himself God — none of which will ever happen. Christendom does not understand that before Christ appears in their hearts, to be seen, to be revealed, that first the Lord must show them how immersed in sin they themselves are — so much so that each man must be shown that his spirit is the offspring of Satan, sitting in the throne of your heart, declaring himself God.

From the Word of the Lord within: "When you see the abomination of desolation do not be afraid; stand your ground; I will come within five minutes to destroy him."

In his Biography, William Penn states how the man-of-sin was discovered just before the Lord returned in His brightness, thus to destroy the man-of-sin:

"Yes, it is Christ the true and only Seed of God, who visited my soul, even in my young years, spread my sins in order before me, reproved me and brought godly sorrow upon me, making me often to weep in solitary places, and say within my soul, O that I knew the Lord as I ought to know him! O that I served him as I ought to serve him! Yes, often was there a great concern upon my spirit about my eternal state, mournfully desiring that the Lord would give my soul rest in the great day of trouble. Now was all the glory of the world as a bubble; yes, nothing was dear to me that I might win Christ; for the love, pleasure and friendship of this world were a burden to my soul. In this seeking state, I was directed to the testimony of Jesus in my own conscience, as the true shining Light, given me to discern the thoughts and intents of my own heart. And no sooner was I turned unto it, but I found it to be that which from my childhood had visited me, though I distinctly knew it not; and when I received it in the love of it, it showed me all that ever I had done, and reproved all the unfruitful works of darkness, judging me as a man in the flesh, and laying judgment to the line, and righteousness to the plummet in me. By the brightness of his coming into my soul, the Lord Jesus discovered the man of sin there, upon his throne, and by the breath of his mouth, which is the two-edged sword of his Spirit, he destroyed his power and kingdom; and having made me a witness of the death of the cross, he has also made me a witness of his resurrection—so that in good measure my soul can now say, I am justified in the spirit; and although the state of condemnation unto death was glorious, yet justification unto life was, and is, more glorious."

2 God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie; so that all those might be damned who do not believe the truth, but have pleasure in unrighteousness.

What truth do they not believe? The anonymous pleadings of the truth, (the light and word, Christ within them), to turn away from their evil ways. The light shines in the darkness of their hearts; and the darkness does not comprehend it. John 1:5. And this is the condemnation, that light has come into the world [every man], but men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil deeds [sins] hates the light [so hates Christ, who is the light] and does not come to the light for fear his deeds will be exposed and reproved. John 3:19-20. When they hear the true gospel in their heart, preached by the word and light of Christ within in every creature under heaven, that too they reject. Still-sinning, so-called Christians, having been incorrectly told that they are in Christ and therefore not subject to any condemnation for their sinful conduct, even reject the pleadings of God as coming from the devil; from the word of the Lord within: "Often they block me, thinking I am an evil spirit."

What lies do they believe? The lie that all your sins are forgiven: past, present, and future because you "believe in Jesus;" which lie is believed by those who love their passions, pleasures, lusts, and selfish lifestyle.

Who tells the lies? The ministers of Christendom, (or any other faith), who tell their followers that rituals, ceremonies, prayers, declarations, or works, (anything except a cleansed heart through the inward cross, repenting from their sinful ways), will cause God to ignore their sinful lives and receive them in heaven when they die. And many will follow their destructive ways, and because of them the way of truth will be maligned. 2 Pet 2:2.

Why do people believe the lies? Because God allows the false church's antichrists to perform miracles. John told us that antichrists and false apostles were already appearing in his time, (Note! Past tense, already had happened and continues today), having gone out from among the true Christians. Isaac Penington, in his exposé of Christendom having become Babylon, explains these miracles being performed by the antichrists, particularly in the time of Babylon's beginning to displace the true church:

Now mark this: antichrist's coming, when first perceived, was very mighty, exceedingly strong. "Whose coming is after the working of Satan, with all power, and signs, and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness," etc. Weigh the thing well. Satan used all his art, and all his strength, to conceive and bring forth this mystery of iniquity, so like the mystery of godliness, that it might pass for reality in the world, and he rule as God in it. With all power, etc., no lack of power to deceive; he did not spare for signs, and lying wonders. Yes, he gave power to the beast to do wonders and miracles, even to make fire come down from heaven on the earth, in the sight of men, (which through Elijah was the sign and wonder by which the God of Israel was distinguished from Baal; power to work this very sign Satan gives to the beast, with which to confirm the godhead of the dragon and antichrist). Rev 13:13-14. These are the things men look for; seeing great power, signs, miracles, they are satisfied. The whole world stands ready to be deceived with this. Yes, and if the eye is not opened in persons, which can distinguish of power, they are deceived. Signs, wonders, and miracles had their place in the first covenant, and were to that part to which the first covenant was; not to those who believe, but to those who do not believe. Now after the full demonstration of the truth by signs and miracles, the power of Satan rises up; and by lying signs, wonders, and miracles overturns the truth. Now the unbelieving part in man expects and calls for signs and miracles, and says they will determine the controversy, and settle the state of the church again; but that part is not to prescribe God his way. Yes, he will steal as a thief upon you, whose eye is abroad, and looks for demonstrations without.

Jesus speaks of miracles and wonders being performed by false Christians:

For there will arise false Christs and prophets, and will show great signs and wonders;
so much that, if it were possible, they would deceive the very elect. Mat 24:24

As Jesus shows below: these false Christians and false prophets think they are true prophets and in Christ.

Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter into the kingdom of heaven;
but [only] he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.. Many will say to Me in that day,
Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?'
And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ Mat 7:21-23

Whoever commits sin practices lawlessness; for sin is lawlessness. 1 John 3:4

And in Revelation, we are told the spirits of demons would be working miracles. Rev 16:14; and the demons work miracles through men who put on a great show of being religious. So, the delusion in Christianity continues today with miracles being performed by people whose fruits clearly show their lack of self-control, humility, gentleness, and peace, which are the fruit of the Holy Spirit; instead their services are often characterized by revelry, raucous behavior, uncontrolled laughter, drunkenness, and foolishness, which are fruits of the flesh. The duped so-called Christians believe the lies accompanied by miracles because they don't love the truth, and they love their pleasures of sinning: lust for things, lust of the flesh, pride, pleasures, etc. This is why God allows such a strong delusion, so that all those might be damned who do not believe the truth, but have pleasure in unrighteousness, (which is sin). What does it mean to be dammed? It means to be left in man's fallen state, making his own decisions, speaking his own words, walking in darkness, fulfilling the desires of his carnal mind, vain imagination, and flesh. So their itching ears eagerly accept the broad easy way sold to them, which way is simply a fable invented by men.

For the time will come when men will not endure sound doctrine, but they will heap [mountainous numbers] to themselves teachers after their own lusts, who will say what their itching ears want to hear; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 2 Tim 4:3-4

For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in that way. Mat 7:13

Christendom has been deceived by a strong delusion because they showed no love for the truth and so were deceived by the Whore of Babylon, the beast with horns like a lamb, the false church, who told them they could see and they were righteous, despite being locked in their sins. And the whole world worshiped this false church of Christendom, thinking they were worshiping Christ, but worshiping the dragon (devil) instead. For this false church excuses its believers from sin, telling them they must be subject to sin until they die, telling them there is no victory over sin, telling them no one can overcome sin — clearly, this is the voice of the devil, and which totally contradicts the scriptures.

On a personal basis, beware, later as you get closer, you will be subjected to many "lying wonders;" 2 Thes 2:9. These are supernatural "signs" to deceive you to believe they are from God. This is scriptural. They are to test you to see if you are committed to the truth. Don't consider the below signs an exhaustive list:

a) expect supernatural occurrences of noises, popping sounds, visions, flashing electrical lights, etc.
(visions can be writings and pictures on the carpets, visions on a wall, they can distort your eyes to see visions in nature,
some can have visions of demons taunting you, even ridiculing your faith — if not visually, definitely by voice)

b) expect their application of bodily sensations: heat, cold, freezing, skin burning, pain, pricks, water, fire, darts, vibrations, crawlings on you, sudden ringing in the ears, heart skips, heart racing up to 200 beats per minute for days, sneezing. These can be felt on any part(s) of the body, often the private parts. "Above all, taking the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one." Ephesians 6:16

They will try to get you to do something wrong; such as something you just thought about, by giving you a "sign" at the exact same time. They want you to think it is God giving you a sign to do something wrong. Don't fall for it. Wrong is wrong and is never of God. When they give up on that, knowing that you recognize the sign to be from them, they will use the same sign to judge your every thought and condemn you every time you have a bad thought, by their signs, (usually something done to your body or popping noises). Or, they will use a 'sign' to try to inhibit you from doing something right; they lie, and switch around, just to keep you confused; so you just have to ignore them. Scripturally, this is the "accuser of the brothers." Rev. 12:10. Don't get resentful. Any anger or resentment will just slow you down.

After you identify one type of sign as evil, a new type of sign is tried to deceive you, and then another, etc. Compared to the miracles of God, these are cheap tricks. Don't fall for them. Ignore them. This is hard because you are so famished for God, and you will want so badly to believe that these "signs and wonders" come from God. He doesn't communicate that way. It is your pride that is working against you here; your pride wants to believe God has finally started doing miracles for your benefit and wants to rush to comply with the instructions, hints, or associations accompanying them.
