Exodus 22

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

 "If a man steals an ox or a sheep and kills or sells it, he shall restore five oxen for an ox, or four sheep for a sheep.

 If a thief is found breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt for his bloodshed.

 But if the sun has risen [so that he is visible], there shall be guilt for slaying him. The thief is to make full restitution; if he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

 If the animal he stole is found alive in his possession, whether it is ox or ass or sheep, he shall restore double.

 If a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed or lets loose his animal and it feeds in another man's field, he shall make restitution from the best of his own field or his own vineyard.

 If fire break out and catches in thorn bushes so that the stacks of grain or the standing grain or the field is consumed, he who kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.

 If a man delivers money or goods to his neighbor to keep and it is stolen out of the man's house, if the thief is found, let him pay double.

 If the thief is not found, then the master of the house shall be brought to the judges, to see whether he has laid his hands on his neighbor's goods.

 For all manner of trespass, whether it concerns ox, ass, sheep, clothing, or any lost thing, which another claims to be his, the case of both parties shall come before the judges; and whomever the judges condemn shall pay double to his neighbor.

 If a man delivers an ass, ox, sheep, or any animal to his neighbor to keep and it dies or is hurt or is driven away, no man seeing it,

 Then an oath before the LORD shall be taken between them, that he has not put his hand on his neighbor's goods; and the owner of it shall accept that, and restitution shall not be made.

 But if it was stolen from the neighbor, he shall make restitution to the owner.

 If it was torn in pieces, then let him bring the remains as evidence; and he shall not make restitution for that which was torn.

 If a man borrows something from his neighbor and it is hurt or dies when its owner is not with it, he shall surely make restitution.

 But if its owner is with it, the borrower shall not make restitution. If it was hired, the hire covers the damage.

 If a man entices a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he shall surely pay a dowry for her to be his wife.

 If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money equal to the dowry of virgins.

 You shall not allow a witch to live.

 Whoever lies with a beast shall surely be put to death.

 He who sacrifices to any god except the LORD shall be utterly destroyed.

 You shall neither mistreat a stranger or oppress him; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

 You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child.

 If you afflict them in any way and they cry to me at all, I will surely hear their cry;

 And my wrath will become hot; I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall be widows and your children fatherless.

 If you lend money to any of my people who are poor, you shall not be like a creditor to them, neither shall you charge them interest.

 If you ever take your neighbor's clothing as a pledge, you shall return it to him by the time that the sun goes down;

 For that is his only covering, it is his clothing for his skin. In what will he sleep? And it shall come to pass, when he cries to me, that I will hear, for I am gracious.

 You shall not revile God or curse a ruler of your people.

 You shall not delay the offering of the first of your ripe produce and juices; and you shall give to me the firstborn of your sons.

 Likewise shall you do with your oxen and with your sheep. Seven days it shall be with its mother; on the eighth day you shall give it to me.

 You shall be holy men to me; so you shall not eat any flesh that is torn by wild beasts; you shall throw it to the dogs.
