Ezekiel 12

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

The word of the LORD came to me, saying,

"Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, who have eyes to see and see not; they have ears to hear and hear not; for they are a rebellious house.

Therefore, son of man, prepare your belongings and move out [as if] for exile, by day in their sight; and go from your place to another place in their sight. It may be they will consider, though they are a rebellious house.

Then bring out your belongings during the day in their sight, as though for exile; and you shall go forth in their sight, like those who go forth into exile.

Dig through the wall in their sight and carry your belongings out through it.

In their sight you shall bear your belongings on your shoulders, and carry them out in the twilight. Cover your face, so that you cannot see the ground for I have made you as a sign to the house of Israel."

And I did as I was commanded. I brought out my belongings during the day, like the belongings of an exile, and in the evening I dug through the wall with my hands. I brought it out in the twilight, and carried it upon my shoulder in their sight.

And in the morning the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

"Son of man, has not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said to you, 'What are you doing?'

Say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, This prophecy concerns the prince in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel who are among them.'

Say, 'I am a sign to you. As I have done, so shall it be done to them; they shall be carried away into exile.

And the prince who is among them shall lift up his belongings on his shoulder in the twilight, and shall go forth. They shall dig through the wall to carry them out through. He shall cover his face, so that he cannot see the ground with his eyes.

I will spread my net over him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; yet he shall not see it, though he shall die there.

And I will scatter toward every wind all who are about him to help him, and all his bands; and I will draw out the sword after them.

Then they shall know that I am the LORD, when I scatter them among the nations and disperse them in the countries.

But I will spare a few men of them from the sword, from the famine, and from the pestilence, so that they may confess all their abominations among the heathen where they come; and they shall know that I am the LORD.'"

Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

 "Son of man, eat your bread with quaking and drink your water with trembling and with anxiety;

And say to the people of the land, 'Thus says the Lord GOD to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the land of Israel: They shall eat their bread with anxiety and drink their water with astonishment for their land will be stripped of all that is in it because of the violence of those who dwell in it.

And the cities that are inhabited shall be laid waste, and the land shall be desolate; and you shall know that I am the LORD.'"

And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

"Son of man, what is this proverb that you have in the land of Israel, saying, 'The days are prolonged [go on], and every vision fails?'

Tell them therefore, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: I will end this proverb, and they will no more use it as a proverb in Israel;' but say to them, 'The days are at hand and the fulfillment of every vision.

For there shall be no more false visions nor flattering divinations within the house of Israel.

For I am the LORD; I will speak, and the word that I will speak will come to pass; it will not be delayed. For in your days, O rebellious house, I will say the word and will perform it, says the Lord GOD.'"

Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying.

"Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, 'The vision that he [Ezekiel] sees is for the future, and he prophesies of times that are far off.'

Therefore say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, None of my words will be delayed any longer, but the word which I have spoken will be done, says the Lord GOD.'"
