Ezekiel 22

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

"Son of man, will you judge; will you judge the bloody city? Then show her all her abominations.

Then say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: The city sheds blood in the midst of it and makes idols to defile itself, so the time of her doom will come.

You have become guilty by the blood that you have shed, and you have defiled yourself by your idols that you have made; and you have caused your days [of judgment] to draw near, and have come to the end of your years. Therefore I have made you a laughingstock to the heathen and a mocking to all the countries.

Those who are near, and those who are far from you, will mock you as infamous and full of turmoil.

Behold, the princes of Israel: every one with power intended to shed blood.

In you they have treated father and mother lightly; in the midst of you they have oppressed the stranger; in you they have mistreated the fatherless and the widow.

You have despised my holy things and have defiled my sabbaths.

In you are slanderous men who carry tales to shed blood, and in you they eat at the mountain shrines; in the midst of you they commit lewdness.

In you they have uncovered their fathers' nakedness; in you have they humbled women who were set apart as ceremonially unclean.

And one has committed abomination with his neighbor's wife, and another has lewdly defiled his daughter in law, and another in you has violated his sister, his own father's daughter.

In you they have taken bribes to shed blood; you have taken usury and excess interest, and you have greedily gained from your neighbors by extortion, and have forgotten me, says the Lord GOD.

Behold therefore, I have struck my hand at the dishonest gain which you have made and at the blood which has been shed in the midst of you.

Can your heart endure or can your hands be strong in the days that I shall deal with you? I the LORD have spoken it, and will do it.

And I will scatter you among the heathen and disperse you in the countries, and will consume the filthiness out of you.

And you shall defile yourself in the sight of the heathen, and you shall know that I am the LORD.'"

And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

"Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross [waste ] to me. They are the brass, tin, iron, and lead that is left in the furnace; they are the dross of silver.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: 'Because you have all become dross, behold therefore, I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem.

As they gather silver, brass, iron, lead, and tin, into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it in order to melt it, so I will gather you in my anger and my fury, and I will leave you there and melt you.

Yes, I will gather you and blow upon you in the fire of my wrath, and you shall be melted in its midst.

As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall you be melted in its midst, and you shall know that I the LORD have poured out my fury upon you.'"

And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

"Son of man, say to her, 'You are the land that is not cleansed, nor rained upon in the day of indignation.'

There is a conspiracy of her [supposed] prophets in your midst, like a roaring lion ravening [plundering] the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows in the midst of her.

Her priests have violated my law and have defiled my holy things. They have put no difference between the holy and unholy, neither have they taught the difference between the unclean and the clean; they have hidden their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.

Her princes in her midst are like wolves devouring the prey, they shed blood and destroy souls to get dishonest gain.

And her prophets have daubed them with untempered mortar by seeing falsehoods and divining lies to them, saying, 'Thus says the Lord GOD,' when the LORD has not spoken.

The people of the land have used oppression and robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy; yes, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.

And I sought for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found none.

Therefore I have poured out my indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath; and I have repaid their own ways upon their heads," says the Lord GOD.
