Ezekiel 24

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

Again in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

"Son of man, record the name of the day, even of this very day; the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this very day.

And speak a parable to the rebellious house, and say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: Put on a pot, put it on and pour water into it.

 Put pieces of meat into it, every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder; fill it with the choice bones;

Take the choicest of the flock. Also burn fuel for the bones under it and make it boil well, and let the bones simmer in it.'

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: 'Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum is in it, and whose scum has not gone out of it! Take it out piece by piece; without lots being cast for it.

For the blood [of sacrifices] she shed is in the midst of her; she put it upon the top of a rock; she did not pour it on the ground to cover it with dust.

To cause fury to come up to take vengeance, I have put her blood upon the top of a rock, so that it would not be covered.'

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: 'Woe to the bloody city! I will make the pile of wood for the great fire.

Heap on wood, kindle the fire, cook the meat well and mix in the spices, and let the bones be burned.

Then set the pot empty upon the coals, that the brass of it may be hot and burn, and the filthiness of it may be melted in it, so that the impurities of it may be consumed.

She has wearied herself with toil, and her great impurities did not go out of her in the fire.

In your filthiness is abomination; because I would have purged you and you were not purged, you will not be purged from your filthiness until my fury against you is spent. [Notice! If you fail to be purged in this life, (the easy way), you will be purged in the next life, (the hard way)!! "They shall eat the fruit of their own way, and be satiated with their own desires," Pro 1:28-32; in Hell, your desires will be satiated — burnt out with a continuous, sickening, avalanche of experiences directed to your desires — thereby you will be purged and purified, the hard way. If we fail to learn how to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world, we will meet His fury, (but accompanied by compassion). "And those who have loathed my law, while they yet had liberty, and when as yet the opportunity of repentance was open to them, understood not, but despised it; the same must learn it after death by pain." 4 Esdras 9:11-13]

I the LORD have spoken it; it shall come to pass and I will do it; I will not go back, neither will I spare, neither will I relent; according to your ways and according to your doings, they will judge you, says the Lord GOD.'"

Also the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

"Son of man, behold, I take away from you the desire of your eyes [wife] with a stroke. Yet you shall neither mourn nor weep, neither shall your tears run down.

Sigh in silence, make no mourning for the dead; bind your turban on your head and put your shoes on your feet, and do not cover your lips or eat the food of mourning."

So I spoke to the people in the morning and in the evening my wife died, and the next morning I did as I was commanded.

And the people said to me, "Will you not tell us what these things that you do mean to us?"

Then I answered them, "The word of the LORD came to me, saying,

Speak to the house of Israel, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will defile my sanctuary, the pride of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and the delight of your soul; and your sons and your daughters whom you have left behind shall fall by the sword.

And you shall do as Ezekiel has done: you shall not cover your lips or eat the food of mourning,

And your turbans shall be upon your heads and your shoes upon your feet; you shall not mourn or weep, but you shall pine away for your iniquities and mourn to one another.

Thus Ezekiel is a sign to you; according to all that he has done shall you do. And when this comes, you shall know that I am the Lord GOD.'

Also, son of man, on the day when I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that upon which they set their minds, and their sons and their daughters,

On that day one who escapes will come to you, to let you hear of it with your ears.

On that day your mouth will be opened to him who has escaped and you shall speak and no more be mute; and you will be a sign to them, and they shall know that I am the LORD."
