Genesis 15

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

After these things, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, "Do not fear, Abram, I am your shield, and your exceedingly great reward."

And Abram said, "LORD God, what can you give me, since I am childless and the heir of my house is my steward, Eliezer of Damascus?"

And Abram said, "You have given no offspring to me; and a servant born in my house is my heir."

And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, "This one shall not be your heir, but he who comes from your own body shall be your heir."

And he brought him outside, and said, "Look toward the heavens and count the stars — if you are able to count them." And he said to him, "So shall your descendants be."

And he believed in the LORD; and He counted it to him as righteousness.

Then he said to him, "I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give you this land to inherit."

And he said, "LORD God, how shall I know that I will inherit it?"

And he said to him, "Bring me a three year old heifer, and a three year old she goat, and a three year old ram, and a turtledove and a young pigeon."

And he brought him all of these and cut them in half and laid each piece beside the other; but he did not divide the birds.

And when the vultures came down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

Now when the sun had gone down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a horror of great darkness fell upon him.

 And God said to Abram, "Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and they will be slaves there; and they will afflict them for four hundred years;

But I will judge that nation whom they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.

And you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age.

But in the fourth generation they shall come back here again, for the iniquity of the Amorites has not yet reaches its fullness."

And it came to pass, that when the sun went down and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace and a burning lamp passed between those pieces.

On the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, " I have given this land to your descendants, from the river of Egypt to the great river Euphrates —

The land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,

The Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,

The Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.
