Hebrews 7:1-10

Display Chapter and Footnotes

This Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,

To whom Abraham gave a tenth of all the spoils. His name when translated means "King of righteousness;"and also "King of Salem," which means "King of peace."

Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he remains as a priest continually.

Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils.

And truly those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brothers, even though their brothers have descended from Abraham.

But this person, whose descent is not counted from Levi, received tithes from Abraham, and blessed him who had the promises.

Yet without contradiction the lesser is blessed by the greater.

Here tithes are received by men who die; but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives forever.

And I may also say that Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham.

For he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.
