Isaiah 52:14

 14 (just as many were horrified by the sight of you); he was so disfigured [that] he no longer looked like a man; [The New International reads: "his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being — and his form marred beyond human likeness." As soon as Jesus was flogged, (we don't know how many lashes he took), and sentenced to be crucified by Pilate, he was handed over to the Roman guard, who then called together the entire Roman cohort or garrison to beat Jesus. They stripped him of his clothing, put on him a purple robe, a crown of thorns, and then they mocked him, spit on him, and beat him so much that his face and body did not look like a man any longer. From the Word of the Lord within: "It would have helped if one soldier was kind to me."]
