|Isaiah 33 |
Woe to you, who spoils, and you were not spoiled; and deal treacherously, and they did not deal treacherously with you! When you cease to spoil, you will be spoiled; and when you stop dealing treacherously, they will deal treacherously with you.
O LORD, be gracious to us; we have waited for you. Be our arm every morning, our salvation in the time of trouble.
At the noise of the tumult, the people fled; at the lifting up of yourself, the nations were scattered.
And your plunder shall be gathered like the gathering of the locusts; he shall run upon them, like the swarming around of locusts.
The LORD is exalted, for he dwells on high; he has filled Zion with judgment and righteousness.
Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times, and the strength of salvation; the reverent fear of the LORD is his treasure.
Behold, their valiant ones shall cry in the streets, the ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly.
The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceases; he has broken the covenant, he has despised the cities and the witnesses, he regards no man.
The earth mourns and languishes; Lebanon is ashamed and withers; Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel drop their fruits.
"Now I will rise," says the LORD; "now will I be exalted; now I will lift myself up.
You shall conceive chaff, you shall bring forth stubble; my breath, as fire, shall devour you. [This applies to those who die still sinning, those who have not been purified while alive on the earth. For those truly seeking, his fire is the baptism of fire.]
And the people shall be as the burnings of lime; they shall be burned up like thorns in the fire. [Therefore as the fire devours the stubble, and the flame consumes the chaff, so their root shall be like rottenness, and their blossom shall go up like dust because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. Isa 5:24]
Hear what I have done, you who are far off and; you who are near, acknowledge my might."
The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness has surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? [For those who die still sinning: "Wail for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as destruction from the Almighty," Isa 13:6; "For behold, the day comes that shall burn like an oven, and all the proud, yes, and all who do wickedly, will be stubble; the day that comes shall burn them up, says the LORD of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch." Mal 4:1. "Behold, they shall be as stubble, the fire shall burn them; they shall not even deliver themselves from the power of the flame; here is no coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before. Isa 47:14]
He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, he who despises the gain of oppression, who keeps his hands from taking bribes, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil; [These are those who die on the inward cross of self-denial, purified while alive on the earth.]
He will dwell on high; his place of defense will be the fortress of rocks; bread will be given him; his waters will be sure.
Your eyes will see the king in his beauty; they will behold the land that is very far off.
Your heart will meditate on the [former] terror. Where is the scribe? Where is the receiver [of tribute]? Where is he who counted the towers?
You will no longer see the fierce people, a people of obscure speech that you can not comprehend, of a stammering tongue that you cannot understand.
Look upon Zion, the city of our feasts; your eyes will see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tabernacle [tent] that will not be taken down; not one of its stakes will ever be removed, neither will any of its cords be broken.
But there the glorious LORD will be a place of broad rivers and streams to us; in which no galley with oars, nor mighty ships will go.
For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.
Your rigging is loosed, they could not strengthen their mast, they could not spread the sail; then the prey and great spoil is divided; even the lame takes the plunder.
And the inhabitant will not say, "I am sick"; the people who dwell in it will be forgiven their iniquity.
