Isaiah 42:1-7

Display Chapter and Footnotes

"Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my Elect One, [Jesus Christ] in whom my soul delights. I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

He will not strive nor cry out, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.

A bruised reed he will not break, and smoking flax he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.

He will not falter nor be discouraged, until he has established judgment in the earth; and the islands shall wait for his law.

Thus says God the LORD, he who created the heavens, and stretched them out; he who spread forth the earth, and that which comes from it; he who gives breath to the people upon it, and spirit to those who walk in it:

"I the LORD have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand; I will keep you and give you for a covenant to the people, for a light to the Gentiles,1

To open the blind eyes, to deliver the prisoners from the prison, those who sit in darkness imprisoned.2 [Until crucified, all men are imprisoned by darkness, with their spiritual eyes blind, stumbling through life like blind men groping the wall.]

"Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles.

He shall not wrangle, nor cry out; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.

A bruised reed he shall not break, and smoking flax he shall not quench, until he sends forth judgment to victory.

In his name the Gentiles shall trust."
