Isaiah 50

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

Thus says the Lord, "Where is the bill of your mother's divorce, by which I have put her away? Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, you have sold yourselves for your iniquities [sins], and your mother is put away for your transgressions.

Why was there no one when I came? When I called, why was there no answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? Or have I no power to deliver? Behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness; their fish stink and die of thirst because there is no water.

I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering."

The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of the learned, so that I would know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He wakens me morning by morning, he wakens my ear to hear as one who is taught.

The Lord GOD has opened my ear; and I was not rebellious, nor did I turn back.

I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to those who plucked off the hair; I did not hide my face from shame and spitting.1

For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore will I not be disgraced. Therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I will not be ashamed.

He is near who justifies me; who will contend with me? Let us stand together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me.

Behold, the Lord GOD will help me; who is he who will condemn me? They will all wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up.

Who among you fears the LORD? Who obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light, trust in the name of the LORD, and stay [his mind] upon his God. [All men start in darkness. Light comes by listening to the Lord and obeying his voice in faith. There is an excellent, detailed writing, Christians should often think on the Name of the LORD, by Steven Crisp available on this site for your reading.]

Behold, all you who kindle [your own spiritual] fire, who surround yourselves with sparks; walk in the light of your own fire and in the sparks that you have kindled. This you shall have from my hand: you shall lie down in torment.
