26 If anyone among you considers himself to be religious but does not bridle [restrain] his tongue, he deceives his own heart [thinking to be religious], and this man's religion is worthless.6 [For we all err in many things; and if any man does not err in his words, he is a perfect man, and able also to control his whole body. James 3:2. The fruit of a tongue that roams is death: "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it shall eat its fruit." Pro 18:21]
|James 3:1-12 |
1 My brothers, not many of you should be teachers, knowing that we who teach will be judged by a stricter judgment;1 [Don't be eager to teach, preach, witness, or testify because until you are perfected, your words will have errors; and even if what you say is true, your words will not have life in them and will not reach the heart of your listeners. Only words spoken by the Spirit and repeated by you in the Spirit will have life in them and reach the heart of your listeners.]
2 For we all err in many things; and if any man does not err in his words, he is a perfect man, and able also to control his whole body.1
3 Indeed, we put bits in the horses' mouths so they will obey us, and [by the bit] we can turn their whole body around.
4 Look at ships, which though they are so great and are driven of fierce winds, yet are turned about with a very small helm, wherever the pilot wants to go.
5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it can boast of great things. Consider how great a forest a little fire kindles!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. It is set among our members, defiling the whole body, and setting on fire the course of our life; and it is set on fire by hell. [Those who love to talk will never see salvation; the fruit of a tongue that roams is death: "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it shall eat its fruit." Pro 18:21. "But let your 'yes' be 'yes,' and your 'no,' 'no;' for whatever is more than these comes from the evil one." Mat 5:37. Until cleansed and purified, the Spirit of Satan is in every man's heart generating the words that men speak.]
7 For every kind of beast, and of bird, and of serpent, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind.
8 But no man can tame the tongue, it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. [Only the grace of God can tame a man's tongue.]
9 With which we bless God the Father, and by which we curse men, who are created in God's likeness.
10 Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
11 Does a spring send forth sweet and bitter water from the same opening?
12 Can the fig tree, my brothers, bear olives? Or can the grapevine bear figs? So no spring can yield both salt water and fresh.
