Jeremiah 11

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

 1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD saying,

 2 "Hear the words of this covenant, and speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem;

 3 And say you to them, Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Cursed is the man that does not obey the words of this covenant,

 4 Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, 'Obey my voice, and do everything that I command you; then you shall be my people, and I will be your God.

 5 That I may perform the oath which I have sworn to your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day.'" Then answered I, and said, "So be it, O LORD."

 6 Then the LORD said to me, "Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying, 'Hear you the words of this covenant, and perform them.'

 7 For I earnestly protested to your fathers from the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even to this day, rising early and protesting, saying, 'Obey my voice.'

 8 Yet they did not obey, nor did they incline their ear to listen, but everyone walked in the imagination of their evil heart.1 Therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do and which they did not perform them."

 9 And the LORD said to me, "A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

 10 They have turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, who refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers."

 11 Therefore thus says the Lord, "Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry to me, I will not hearken to them.

 12 Then shall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem go, and cry to the gods to whom they offer incense; but they shall not save them at all in the time of their trouble.

 13 For according to the number of your cities were your gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have you set up altars to that shameful thing, even altars to burn incense to Baal.'

 14 Therefore do not pray for this people, neither lift up a cry or prayer for them because I will not hear them in the time that they cry to me for their trouble.

 15 What has my beloved to do in my house, seeing she has wrought lewdness with many, and the holy flesh is passed from you? When you do evil, then you rejoice.

 16 The LORD called your [Israel and Judah] name, A green olive tree, fair, and with good fruit. With the noise of a great tumult he has kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken.

 17 For the LORD of hosts, who planted you, has pronounced destruction against you, for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke me to anger in offering incense to Baal."

 18 And the LORD has given me knowledge of it, and I know it; then you showed me their doings.

 19 But I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I did not know that they had devised plots against me, saying, "Let us destroy the tree with the fruit on it, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered."

 20 But, O LORD of hosts, who judges righteously, who tries the reins and the heart, let me see your vengeance on them because have I revealed my cause to you.

 21 "Therefore thus says the Lord of the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, saying, 'Do not prophesy not in the name of the LORD, so that you will not die not by our hand.'

 22 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, Behold, I will punish them. The young men will die by the sword; their sons and their daughters will die by famine;

 23 And there shall be no remnant of them because I will bring evil and destruction upon the men of Anathoth, even in the year of their visitation."

1 Once again, note! To please God then and now, you must obey his voice. You must do everything he commands you to do as you listen to the words of his voice. If you walk according to you own will, you are exactly like Israel and Judah, whom God destroyed because they walked after the imagination of their own hearts. Faith is to hear the voice and obey it. All other faith is imaginary.

The only difference between the Old Testament, before Jesus, and now, with Jesus, is:

  1. With sincere repentance from obvious evil, we can approach God to receive his changing grace, regardless of our past sins. Before Jesus, it was impossible to receive God's grace without having walked very closely to the whole law.

  2. Before Christ, the perfect law made it possible for a man to become perfect, but not lastingly perfect; they were like Adam, still subject to falling to temptation. David is the primary example. He was made perfect, but then he fell, and fell hard. Suffering the judgment of God, he did not lose faith, but persisted in repentance until he was restored again.

    Christ's perfection of an obedient, faithful believer is permanent, forever. Even more important, whereas the Law brought small numbers of the faithful to temporary perfection, because to receive God's favor one had to walk very closely to the whole law; Christ made it possible for tens of thousands to become perfect. By grace we have the opportunity to be purified and perfected by God's power. We read the many references to perfection in the early Church of the Apostles, and we can read about the thousands of early Quakers who also received perfection through repentance on the inward cross of self-denial. Use your common sense and realize that when Christ told us to be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect, he would provide a way — which he did — the cross.

  3. Now the reward for perfection is to enter the Kingdom of Heaven as a new creature, Jesus having been resurrected in your heart, to be in union with he and God, (junior but up to him). This was impossible before Jesus came to the earth to establish the new covenant. The angels longed to look into the Kingdom, and the prophets could only be made perfect and enter the Kingdom in conjunction with our entering.
