Job 28

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 [Job still speaking] "Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined.

2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted out of ore.

3 He sets an end to darkness, and searches the furthest recesses for ore buried in darkness, and the shadow of death.

4 He sinks shafts far from people; in places forgotten by the human foot. They hang far away from men, swinging about.

5 As for the earth, out of it comes bread; and under it is turned up as if by fire.

6 The stones of it are the place of sapphires, and it has the dust of gold.

7 There is a pathway which no bird of prey knows, and which the vulture's eye has not seen.1

8 Proud beasts have not trodden it, nor has the fierce lion passed over it.

9 He puts out his hand upon the rock; he overturns the mountains by the roots.

10 He cuts out rivers among the rocks; and his eye sees every precious thing.

11 He binds the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hidden He brings forth to light.2

12 But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?

13 Man does not know the price of it; neither is it found in the land of the living.

14 The depth said, 'It is not in me;' and the sea said, 'It is not with me.'

15 Wisdom cannot be obtained for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for its price.

16 It cannot be compared to the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.

17 Gold and the crystal cannot equal it; it shall not be exchanged for jewels or fine gold.

18 No mention shall be made of coral or of pearls for the price of wisdom is above rubies.

19 The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

20 From where then does wisdom come? And where is the place of understanding?

21 Since it is hidden from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the birds [demons] of the air.

22 Destruction and death say, 'We have heard of its fame with our ears.'

23 God understands the way of it, and he knows the place of it.

24 For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole heaven.

25 When he made the force for the winds; and weighed the waters by measure.

26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder.

27 Then he saw wisdom, and declared it; he prepared it, yes, and searched it out.

28 And to man he said, 'Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.'"

1 There is a pathway which no bird of prey knows, and which the vulture's eye has not seen. Job is speaking of the heart of a man, comparing it to the earth. Within the heart of a man is the pathway to light, to the Lord, to the Kingdom — and evil men cannot see this way. It is the Lord, chained down in darkness; a light that shines in the remote darkness of a man's heart, pleading with every man to follow righteousness and forsake his evil ways. When a man hears his words and does not obey them, those words will judge him when he dies. John 12:47-48

2 the thing that is hidden He brings forth to light. I the LORD search the heart, I try the mind, Jer 17:10. The LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intents of the thoughts. 1 Chron 28:9. But all things that are reproved [sins] are made manifest [revealed] by the light. For whatever reveals is light. Eph 5:13.
