⁷ He who is of God, hears God's words. You cannot hear his words because you are not of God. Many people think that this applies to the Jews only, thinking them to be some kind of particularly evil persons. But this applies to all men of all nations; because, until a man has been taught by the Spirit of God, he cannot recognize someone speaking the words and ideas as coming from the Spirit of God. The Spirit of God has to slowly teach a man spiritual things, changing his outlook on life, discovering the truth. But the natural man cannot receive the things of the Spirit of God for they are foolishness to him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Cor 2:14. Until the Spirit of God shows a man his sins, the natural man is even unaware of the depth of his slavery to sin; this is the basic function of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter: when he comes, he will prove the world wrong [reprove all men] concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment. John 16:8. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. John 16:13
