Psalms 11

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

1 In the LORD I put my trust and take refuge; how can you say to my soul, "Flee like a bird to your mountain?"

2 For lo, the wicked bend their bow; they make ready their arrow upon the string, so that they may [in darkness] secretly shoot at the upright in heart.

3 If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?

4 The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD's throne is in heaven. His eyes behold; his eyes try the children of men.

5 The LORD tries the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and him who loves violence.1 [Note the Lord hates those who love violence, and our entire society loves violence. Books, TV, movies, newspapers, magazines, video games, and even cartoons are full of violence; and the violence has to become increasingly brutal to titillate our entertainment. So it's not only those who act violently who have a problem, but also those who attend the latest Hollywood thriller, who aggressively indulge in computer games, who watch the murder shows on TV, who devour the news looking for stories of peoples' tragedies, etc. We can say we hate violence, but then we eagerly watch and read the media that is full of it, proving our love of violence. On the day after the Batman slaughter in Denver came this from the Word of the Lord within, "Speak out against it. Violence has become pervasive." The definition of pervasive is: "spreading through the whole of something and becoming a very obvious feature of it;" it is our entire society. We stand convicted by God; we are addicted to violence, sexual immorality, and profanity that spews from our entertainment media continually.]

6 Upon the wicked he shall rain coals; fire, brimstone, and a burning wind shall be the portion of their cup.

7 For the LORD is righteous, he loves righteousness; the upright shall behold His face.

1 The LORD tries the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and him who loves violence. We love violence because we pay to watch it, we pay to listen to it, we pay to read about it, we pay for violent games. There are those who deny that watching violence fosters violence. There are those who say that a child who grows up killing thousands of people in his computer games is not more prone to violence than anyone else. There are those who say that watching pornography on TV, in movies, or on the internet, does not foster sexual immorality. They are wrong! Their greed for the profit of their enterprises disqualifies them, yet in the name of "freedom" we expose our children to this harmful material. It has been many years since I went to a movie, but I remember in the 70's seeing a violent film called Rollerball, (this was several years before I believed in a God). As I exited the theater, I could feel a strong desire to slug someone if they got in my face. As I was recently recalling my feelings in this incident, I heard the Lord say: "violence begets violence." The Lord destroyed the people of the earth in the great flood because:

The earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
And God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all people had corrupted their ways upon the earth.
And God said to Noah, "I am going to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Gen 6:11-13

Since our world has again become filled with violence, we can expect a repeat — just not with water this time.

Any heterosexual man that is honest will freely admit that even looking at women with revealing clothes arouses his sexual interest; pornography goes much further. Violence, pornography, and profanity fill our airwaves. The more we watch it, the more we become desensitized to it; which means the more we find it acceptable. From the Word of the Lord within, "Abhor violence;" and "Mankind's failure—sexual immorality." Turn it off. Get rid of it. Walk out. Don't pay to promote violence, sexual immorality, or profanity. Boycott it all.
