Psalms 73

Previous Chapter | Next Chapter

Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are of a pure in heart.

But as for me, my feet were almost gone, my steps had almost slipped.

For I was envious of the foolish when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

For there are no pangs in their death, but their strength is firm.

They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.

Therefore pride is around their neck like a chain; violence covers them like a garment.

Their iniquity bulges with abundance; the imaginations of their minds know no limit.

They are corrupt and speak wickedly concerning oppression; they speak loftily.

They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue swaggers through the earth.

Therefore his people return to them and drink a full cup of water from them.

And they say, "How does God know? And is there knowledge in the most High?"

Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.

Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocence.

For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.

But if I had said, "I will speak thus," I would have betrayed the generation of your children.

When I thought to understand this, it was too painful for me,

Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I understood their destiny.

Surely you set them in slippery places; you cast them down into destruction.

How they are brought into desolation in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors.

As a dream when one awakens, so, O Lord, it will be when you awaken, you shall despise their outward show.

Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my spirit.

I was so foolish and ignorant; I was like a beast before you.

Nevertheless I am continually with you; you have held me by my right hand.

You will guide me with your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is none on earth that I desire beside you.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you will destroy all those who are unfaithful to you.

But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may tell of all your works.
